New retrofit system tracks chemical use and cost per wash in real time

A new monitoring platform aims to give car wash operators line-by-line visibility into one of their largest operating expenses. Carwashminder has released its Flow Meter System, a retrofit product that measures chemical usage across every bay and reports the results to a cloud dashboard.

According to reporting from the International Carwash Association, the Hayden, Idaho company installs a flow meter on each chemical line to track dispensing events, chemical volume, flow rate, and dispense duration. The system records usage at 0.5 mL resolution and updates the dashboard within 30 seconds, accessible from any web browser.

How the system works

Many washes verify chemical performance through periodic titration, volumetric testing, and manual inventory checks. Carwashminder founder David Baugh argues that approach often surfaces problems too late, after wash quality slips or a barrel runs dry. "Chemical is one of the largest operating expenses in the car wash business," Baugh said in the announcement, noting that changes in an injector's flow pattern can reveal developing problems early.

Each preconfigured sensor box monitors up to seven chemical injection points, connects over Wi-Fi, and ships ready to install in existing chemical lines. The platform is designed to work with existing injectors and chemical-delivery equipment, with data hosted on Google Cloud Platform.

The feature set includes near-real-time monitoring of volume, flow rate, and consumption trends, plus high- and low-usage deviation detection. Equipment diagnostics flag off-pattern dosing and signs of clogged, failing, or misadjusted injectors. Operators can configure email and SMS alerts for abnormal usage, low barrel levels, and system issues, with quiet hours and scheduled reports available.

On the inventory side, the system tracks barrel and facility supply based on measured usage, projects days of supply, records refill history, and calculates chemical cost. Wash-package analytics and per-bay reporting produce a calculated chemical cost per wash. Multi-location reporting with role-based access is available for distributors, owners, and managers.

Pricing and availability

The Flow Meter System is available now starting at $2,500 per sensor box, with dashboard and alert subscriptions sold separately. Multi-bay pricing, custom sensor configurations, and on-site installation are offered for larger facilities.

Why it matters for operators

Chemical spending is a significant and variable cost that many operators track only in aggregate, if at all. An injector drifting out of adjustment or a mis-set dosing rate can quietly inflate costs or degrade wash quality for days before anyone notices. A system that measures usage per line and per bay gives operators a way to catch those problems earlier and to tie chemical cost directly to specific wash packages.

The per-wash cost reporting is the most practical piece for margin management. Knowing what each package actually costs in chemicals helps with pricing decisions, package design, and spotting waste. Low-barrel alerts and days-of-supply projections can also reduce the risk of running out mid-shift, which affects both throughput and customer experience.

Operators should weigh the upfront hardware cost and ongoing subscription against their current chemical spend and the labor now devoted to manual testing. For a single-bay operation the math may be tighter, while multi-location owners and distributors managing several sites may find the centralized reporting and diagnostics more compelling. As with any retrofit, the value depends on whether the alerts and data actually change how the wash is managed.
