The RipTide Car Wash is running a monthlong appreciation campaign for teachers, administrators and school staff, offering them free washes at any of its locations throughout August. According to reporting from Professional Carwashing & Detailing, educators simply need to present a valid school ID to qualify.
The Raleigh, North Carolina based chain operates 22 locations across Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, with more sites in development. This is the second year the company has run the promotion, timed to coincide with the start of a new school year. CEO Chris Gardner said the strong response to the inaugural version made continuing the effort an easy decision.
What the campaign includes
The free wash offer runs at every RipTide location for the full month. Gardner framed the initiative as a gesture of thanks to school employees, describing them as central to the communities the company serves.
Alongside the free washes, each RipTide site is doubling as a collection point for a back-to-school supply drive. The company is asking community members to donate new classroom items such as notebooks, pencils, art supplies, backpacks, tissues and disinfectant wipes. Collected supplies will be distributed to local schools.
The operator also extends year-round support to schools and nonprofits by providing raffle and fundraising items, including prepaid unlimited wash club memberships and free wash vouchers. Organizations interested in those donations are directed to ask for the manager at their nearest location.
Part of a broader industry pattern
RipTide is not alone in courting educators this season. Other operators have launched similar back-to-school efforts, including chains running teacher sweepstakes and fundraising partnerships tied to local schools and sports programs. Community giving campaigns timed to the academic calendar have become a common marketing and goodwill tactic across the wash sector.
Why it matters for operators
Seasonal appreciation promotions like this one accomplish several goals at once, and they are worth studying even for single-site operators. A free wash for teachers drives traffic during a specific window, introduces new customers to the tunnel and creates natural opportunities to convert first-time visitors into unlimited wash club members. The requirement to show a school ID keeps the offer targeted and controllable while still generating goodwill.
The supply drive layered on top adds a second reason for the broader community to visit, and it positions each wash as a neighborhood hub rather than just a transaction point. Operators considering a similar play should think about the full funnel: capturing contact information or offering a membership trial to teachers who redeem a free wash can turn a one-time giveaway into recurring revenue.
The year-round donation program RipTide runs, supplying wash memberships and vouchers to schools and nonprofits for raffles, is a low-cost tool any operator can replicate. Prepaid memberships given as prizes cost little in incremental terms but expose new households to the subscription model. The key lesson is that community outreach and customer acquisition can be the same activity when structured deliberately.
