ScrubaDub is celebrating six decades in business with a two-week run of customer promotions across its tunnel locations in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and New Hampshire. According to reporting from Professional Carwashing & Detailing, the celebration runs from Sept. 23 through Oct. 7 and touches all of the family-owned company's more than 20 tunnel sites.

During the promotion, every ScrubaDub tunnel will feature a limited-edition Birthday Cake scent infused into the wash process, developed with longtime partner Simoniz USA. Customers who would rather skip the fragrance can switch their vehicle to air recirculation before entering the tunnel.

What the celebration includes

The schedule blends giveaways with a nostalgic pricing move. On Sept. 26 and 27, hundreds of customers at each location will receive a free 60th anniversary chocolate and air freshener with their wash while supplies last.

The centerpiece falls on Sept. 30, the company's official 60th birthday, when the Express Car Wash price drops to $2 at every tunnel location, matching the express price ScrubaDub charged in 1966. Employees at the Natick and Framingham, Massachusetts, sites will wear black ties and white collared shirts modeled on uniforms from decades past, and both locations will hand out free cupcakes from a food truck starting at 11 a.m. Other tunnels will continue giving away anniversary chocolate. On Oct. 7, ScrubaDub Unlimited members can save 20 cents per gallon at participating company gas stations.

The milestone marks 60 years for a third-generation, family-owned operator that has washed more than 100 million cars, employs over 300 people and serves 23 communities through carwashes, detailing centers, gas stations and convenience stores. CEO Bob Paisner tied the anniversary to the values set by founders Marshall and Elaine Paisner, saying keeping a family business strong "takes more than sharing a last name."

A family business betting on independence

The company traces its start to 1966, when Marshall and Elaine Paisner opened one of the earliest automated carwashes in the Northeast. Their sons Bob and Danny joined in the 1970s and expanded the business into four states and multiple formats. The third generation followed, with Mathew Paisner joining in 2012 and Alex and Ian Paisner in 2017.

The source notes that ScrubaDub has invested in technology throughout its history, helping develop an early roller-on-demand conveyor in 1970, creating its proprietary SuperGlo soap in 1987 and building an early loyalty program that used vehicle barcodes rather than punch cards. The company has also drawn national recognition, including awards from Inc. magazine and a 2001 White House honor during Small Business Week. Its scholarship program has awarded more than $135,000 to employees and their children since 2019.

The report frames the milestone against a wave of private equity and consolidation reshaping the industry, noting that ScrubaDub has chosen to remain independent while continuing succession planning.

Why it matters for operators

ScrubaDub's playbook shows how an independent chain can turn a milestone into a marketing and community event without heavy discounting across the board. The $2 express wash is a one-day loss leader tied to a specific date and story, which limits margin exposure while generating traffic and press. The giveaways, uniforms and branded scent give staff and customers a shared experience that reinforces local identity, something harder for corporate-owned competitors to replicate. For operators weighing whether to stay independent amid consolidation, ScrubaDub offers a case study in using longevity, loyalty programs and community investment as competitive differentiators.
