Soapy Joe's, a family-owned car wash chain with 27 locations across San Diego County, brought its mascot to Comic-Con as part of a marketing activation built around fan engagement rather than a straightforward giveaway. According to reporting from Auto Laundry News, the mascot, Soapy, appeared at the convention on a mission to find a new sidekick, giving the visit a storyline that team members could build on with attendees.

At the event, Soapy and Soapy Joe's staff distributed free wash coupons, posed for photos, and interacted with convention-goers, many of whom were dressed as their favorite characters.

Turning a car wash into an experience

The company framed the appearance as consistent with its broader brand identity, which centers on treating a routine car wash as an experience. CEO Lorens Attisha said Comic-Con attendees come looking for an experience, and connected that to what the chain tries to deliver at its locations. He also described the mascot as a tool for building loyalty, saying Soapy "has always been about creating fans."

Marketing director Adriana Escobedo said the goal was to have Soapy show up, have fun, take photos, and hand out free washes. The sidekick search, she noted, added a playful narrative while keeping the mascot's interactions in character. The identity of the new sidekick had not been revealed at the time of the event, leaving an open storyline that fans could continue to follow.

A local audience play

Comic-Con takes place in San Diego, the same market Soapy Joe's serves, making the convention a concentrated gathering of potential local customers. Rather than relying solely on the coupons themselves, the chain paired the free washes with a memorable interaction, giving attendees a reason to associate the brand with a positive in-person moment. The approach reflects a growing emphasis among consumer-facing car wash operators on differentiating through personality and experience.

Why it matters for operators

Soapy Joe's activation is a reminder that local marketing does not have to be limited to signage, direct mail, or digital ads. Large regional events draw dense crowds of nearby residents, and a car wash brand with an established mascot can turn that foot traffic into face-to-face engagement at relatively low cost. The free wash coupon remains the core acquisition tool, but pairing it with a photo opportunity and a lighthearted storyline increases the odds that the interaction is remembered and shared.

For operators without a mascot, the underlying lesson still applies. Tying a promotion to a recognizable event, giving customers a reason to participate beyond a discount, and creating shareable moments can extend the reach of a giveaway well past the people who physically attend. Operators should also weigh the value of showing up where their existing customer base already gathers, since a hyper-local event concentrates the audience most likely to convert into repeat wash members.

The activation also underscores the value of consistency between in-store experience and marketing. A brand that promises an experience at the wash builds credibility when its outside marketing delivers that same tone. For membership-driven operators, that alignment can support retention as much as it drives new signups.
