Tommy's Express is opening a new car wash in Yorktown, Virginia, and marking the debut with 10 days of free washes for the surrounding community. According to reporting from the International Carwash Association, the site sits at 6440 George Washington Memorial Highway near the Red Barn Food Store, with the free promotion running from Friday, August 14, through Sunday, August 23.
The location is operated by local franchise partners and follows the brand's standard playbook: a free-wash grand opening period designed to build early membership signups and drive first visits before the site converts to paid service.
What the site offers
The facility uses the recognizable Tommy's Express building design and the brand's proprietary tunnel equipment. Large bay windows let customers watch their vehicles move through the wash on a dual-belt conveyor built to handle a range of vehicle types. The company says a full wash runs in under three minutes from start to finish.
Outside the tunnel, guests have access to free self-serve interior vacuum stations and mat washers. The site also promotes the TommyClub Unlimited Wash Membership, which customers can sign up for through the Tommy's Express mobile app. Members use license plate recognition for automatic entry and can choose among four wash package tiers.
The brand behind the location
Tommy's Express operates as a national franchise built on the history of Quality Car Wash, founded by Jacob, Sonny, and Tom Essenburg in 1969. The buildings and equipment, originally developed by Tommy Car Wash Systems, are manufactured in West Michigan. Franchisees receive support that includes training, marketing, technical assistance, and access to franchise-exclusive wash products and technology. The company notes it ranks first in the car wash category on Entrepreneur Magazine's Franchise 500 list and appears among the publication's fastest-growing franchises.
Why it matters for operators
A new express tunnel entering a local market changes the competitive picture for nearby washes, and the free-wash launch window is the moment when that pressure is most visible. Ten days of free service is an aggressive customer acquisition tool: it removes price as a barrier, generates trial volume, and creates a large pool of prospects to convert into recurring membership. Operators competing in the Yorktown area should expect a temporary spike in traffic to the new site and plan for potential churn among their own subscribers during the promotion.
The launch also underscores the membership-first economics that now define express washing. Tommy's is using the free period primarily to funnel customers into its app-based unlimited plan, with license plate recognition smoothing the recurring-billing relationship. Independent operators without automated entry, tiered packages, or a mobile signup path may find retention harder when a franchise competitor arrives with those tools built in.
Finally, the under-three-minute throughput claim and dual-belt conveyor point to the capacity advantage that drives site-level revenue in the express model. Operators evaluating equipment upgrades or new builds should weigh how conveyor design and wash speed affect both peak-hour throughput and the customer experience that supports membership renewal.
