Why building redundancy into every wash system protects the customer experience

A veteran operator argues that customers judge a wash on the day something breaks, making backup systems for tunnels, vacuums, and payment essential.

Customers rarely notice a car wash on the day everything works. They form lasting opinions on the day something fails, and whether they felt the effect. That is the central argument in a column by Anthony Analetto, president of Sonny's CarWash Equipment Division, published in Auto Laundry News.

Analetto frames redundancy not as a maintenance expense but as a promise the customer never sees an operator keep. When a single piece of equipment fails and nothing is behind it, the customer leaves with one story to tell everyone they know.

Redundancy inside and outside the tunnel

In a well tuned tunnel, Analetto writes, every surface is cleaned by multiple motions and materials so no surface depends on one piece of equipment. When a top brush retracts off a tall vehicle, a mitter or high pressure should still work the roof. When a wrap folds back, side brushes keep covering doors and quarters. The result is that losing one motion never means a dirty car.

Drying gets similar attention. He advises spec'ing blowers a step above the minimum so the extra air both sends cars out drier and covers the wash if one blower quits. He calls this one investment pulling double duty, with no extra equipment bolted on.

The failures customers remember most often happen outside the tunnel, at vacuums, dryers, and pay stations. Analetto recommends sizing vacuum systems so a single failed producer never leaves a customer without suction, ideally with redundant producers on separate trunk lines. Where that is not feasible, some operators convert least used stations to point-of-use vacuums so something is always available. He notes that failed producers are rare; failed maintenance is more common, which is why spare nozzles, hoses, cuffs, and filter bags should be stocked.

Payment and back room backups

Analetto warns that the old habit of switching to cash only during a point-of-sale outage no longer works, because many customers carry neither cash nor a physical card. Turning them away costs both the sale and their future business. He points to a simple backup payment method his son keeps on a phone at his washes, one that has never been used. That, he says, is the point: preparing for what will almost certainly never happen matters as much as preparing for what will.

In the back room, he suggests planning excess capacity into hydraulic packs so a healthy pack can carry a brush while a failed one is repaired, along with having the hose, fittings, and swaging tools on hand for swaps. The goal is not a spare for every part but a plan that keeps cars moving.

He closes by pushing operators past reactive backups toward prevention. Sensor intelligence, remote monitoring, and exception alerts can flag a friction spike or a struggling motor before a customer feels anything, letting repairs happen on schedule rather than during a Saturday rush.

Why it matters for operators

Downtime is a customer retention problem, not just a repair ticket. A single broken vacuum stall, a damp car, or a declined payment can generate the negative story that follows a wash on social media and in word of mouth. Building redundancy into cleaning, drying, vacuums, payment, and hydraulic systems spreads risk so no single failure ruins the experience. Layering in monitoring technology turns backup planning into early warning, allowing operators to fix issues on their own timeline and keep the day something breaks invisible to everyone outside the back room.
