El Car Wash has moved into the Chicago market by acquiring four Sparkle Express Car Wash locations, giving the operator an immediate presence in one of the country's largest metropolitan areas. The deal, according to reporting from Auto Laundry News, serves as the opening step in a broader plan to build out 50 sites across Chicagoland.

The company says the Sparkle acquisition anchors a pipeline that combines ground-up development with additional acquisitions. Geoff Karas, CEO and co-founder of El Car Wash, said the company has been building toward its Chicago strategy for years and described Sparkle as a strong initial platform for launching the brand locally.

Transition and rebranding plans

As the four Sparkle locations move under El Car Wash ownership, the company plans to invest in the sites while keeping the elements that made them successful. Over time, the washes will be rebranded and upgraded to match El's standard offering, which includes premium wash quality, fast service, unlimited membership plans, complimentary amenities, and an emphasis on hospitality.

Karas pointed to Sparkle's existing customer loyalty across several Chicagoland communities as a foundation the company intends to strengthen. He framed the broader market as a major growth opportunity as El works toward becoming a national brand.

The 50-site roll-out is designed to span the City of Chicago and suburbs in all directions. El Car Wash said it has already secured entitlements in areas including Lyons, Lake in the Hills, and Downers Grove, signaling that development activity is set to follow the initial acquisition quickly.

A deeper Midwest footprint

The Chicago entry builds on El Car Wash's existing Midwest operations. The company runs eight locations in Metro Detroit and has another 10 openings planned there over the next year. Across all of its regions, which now include the Southeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic, El Car Wash has grown to 110 locations and nearly 600,000 members through a mix of acquisitions and new construction.

Why it matters for operators

El Car Wash's arrival in Chicago is a clear signal that well-funded regional chains continue to target major metros through a dual approach of buying existing operators and developing new sites. For independent operators in Chicagoland, the planned 50-site build-out means membership competition and marketing pressure are likely to intensify over the next several years, particularly in suburbs where El has already secured entitlements.

The Sparkle deal also offers a reminder of how acquirers position these transactions. El says it plans to preserve the strengths of the acquired locations before rebranding, an approach aimed at retaining existing members through the transition. Operators weighing a sale should note that established customer loyalty and local reputation remain valuable assets to buyers, and operators competing against newly acquired chains should expect upgraded facilities and aggressive unlimited membership offers once conversions are complete.

The pace of El's growth, from 110 locations and nearly 600,000 members spread across three regions, underscores that consolidation is still reshaping competitive dynamics in markets large and small. Watching where national brands secure entitlements can give nearby operators early warning of where new competition will land.
